There is something special about stepping away from the busyness of everyday life and giving yourself permission to slow down, move differently and reconnect with what matters.

Life has a funny way of pulling us towards the extremes. More work. More achievement. More productivity. At the same time, we’re told to rest more, switch off, practise self-care. Somewhere in the middle of all that, balance can feel surprisingly elusive.

Perhaps finding balance isn’t a process of subtraction and addition. Maybe it’s simply knowing when to lean in and when to step back.

Drawing inspiration from Daoist philosophy and its concept of the Middle Way, alongside the yogic teachings of the three gunas, we’ll spend the week exploring the dynamic nature of balance and what it means to live in harmony with ourselves and the world around us.

The Middle Way reminds us that wisdom is often found between the extremes. Rather than striving for constant productivity or endless relaxation, it invites us to cultivate a way of living that is responsive, sustainable and deeply human.

In yogic philosophy, the gunas describe the three fundamental qualities that shape our experience. Rajas is the energy of action, ambition and movement. Tamas offers rest, stability and restoration, yet in excess can lead to heaviness or stagnation. Sattva is the quality of clarity, harmony and balance that arises when these energies exist in right relationship. Throughout the week, we’ll explore practices that help us recognise these natural rhythms cultivating greater awareness of when to move, when to rest, and how to respond with greater presence and intention.

Balance isn’t something we arrive at once and keep forever. It’s something we continually practise. We notice. We adjust. We respond. Again and again.

Throughout the week, we’ll explore these ideas together on the mat and off, and discover what resonates most with you. Morning Qi Gong and guided meditation invite us to slow down and arrive fully in the day. Strong Vinyasa Yoga and Reformer Pilates encourage us to move with strength, focus and intention. Evening Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra create space to soften, restore and integrate. Daily sauna, ice baths, magnesium soaks, massages, nourishing Sri Lankan food, a wildlife safari, maybe some turtle releases, breathtaking scenery and plenty of laughter all become part of the same experience. Different expressions of the same rhythm. We believe joy isn’t separate from wellbeing, it’s an essential part of it. Having fun is a sacred act, and making space for play, curiosity and connection is every bit as valuable as the quieter moments of reflection. Enjoy as much or as little of what’s on offer as you need.

This retreat isn’t about escaping real life. It’s an invitation to fully embrace it. To be fully present for each and every moment of it.

Our hope is that you leave Sri Lanka feeling stronger, rested and more balanced. Not because life has become quieter or simpler, but because you’ve had the space to quiet the noise, recognise the season you’re in now, and reconnect with what you need most. Balance isn’t a place we arrive and remain. As inevitably as night follows day, imbalance will return but there is always a path back.

A Typical Day

No two days will look quite the same. Each has been thoughtfully shaped around movement, recovery, exploration and connection, so you can find your own rhythm within it.

The morning begins gently, often with meditation and Qi Gong as the sun comes up over the garden. From there, choose your intensity. Maybe an energising Vinyasa flow or Reformer Pilates to build strength and focus. Mid-morning, there’s time to wander: a barefoot stroll down the beach to Mutts street dog café for good coffee and company. Afternoons are yours. Float in the pool, book a massage, sink into the ice bath and sauna at the bath house, or simply do nothing at all. As the light softens you may wish to come back together for Yin Yoga and Yoga Nidra, easing the body into rest before a dinner under the stars.

Twice during the week, the rhythm shifts entirely. One evening we head into Galle, wandering the old town’s cobbled streets and colonial architecture before dinner at a spot of your choosing. Another sees the group pile into a convoy of tuk-tuks bound for Hiriketiya Bay, chasing sunset and a seriously good meal at one of the area’s best-loved local restaurants. On both days, a relaxed lunch at the resort takes the place of dinner so you arrive at the evening’s adventure unhurried and ready for it. And then there’s Yala, a half day tracking Sri Lanka’s incredible wildlife through the national park. It’s the kind of day you’ll be telling stories about for years.

This is your retreat. Do a little, do a lot. Honour your own rhythm.

Meet Your Facilitators

Mercia

Mercia is inspired by a lifetime of athleticism, diverse movement practices and a dedication to embodied learning. Her journey with yoga and Pilates began two decades ago while rehabilitating a lower back injury and tendonitis from overtraining as a competitive swimmer. She’s a 500+ hour certified Yoga teacher trained in the Ashtanga-Vinyasa system and Yin Yoga, an accredited Pilates and Reformer instructor, and holds a degree in Zoology, Physiology and Nutrition, a background that fuels her fascination with the healing potential of movement, meditation and community. Outside of teaching, Mercia still competes in open water swimming, lifts heavy at the gym, and spends her quiet moments with a good book, a cup of cacao among friends, or out on this incredible coastline with her rescue dogs and husband.

Kat

Kat is the founder of Village Yoga & Pilates and a 300+ hour Yoga, Mat Pilates and Qi Gong teacher with a passion for helping people move well, age well and find genuine connection through movement. Kat discovered yoga at 30, and although building a consistent practice didn’t come easily, it became the one thing she kept returning to, providing balance, resilience and perspective through almost three decades in a demanding corporate career. She’s since completed a range of teacher trainings and continues expanding her knowledge across complementary movement disciplines, driven by the belief that movement should evolve with us throughout life. Having now completely traded corporate life for Village, you’ll usually find Kat teaching Yin Yoga, Qi Gong or Mat Pilates, dreaming up the next community event, or finding new ways to bring people together. Her vision: a genuine third space where movement is just the beginning, where friendships flourish, laughter is shared, and healthy ageing is something we embrace together.
